What is the Eucharist?
The Eucharist is another name for the Holy Communion. The Eucharist is part of the mass, and is the most important part. There are 2 parts of the mass, they are called the ‘Liturgy of the word’ and the ‘Liturgy of the Eucharist’. The main part in the Eucharist is the re-enactment of the Last Supper and the receiving of the bread and wine.
The wine represents the blood of Christ and the bread represents the body of Christ. Every time you go to church you receive the blood and body of Christ (bread and wine), this is called communion. When the Priest holds up wine and bread he says ‘For this is my body and blood which has been given up for you’, because Jesus sacrificed his life for us. The Eucharist is a time where we gather together and celebrate what God has done for us. The Eucharist is our way of saying thanks to God.
