Signs, Sights, Sounds
-
Breaking of the bread: After the Priest breaks the bread everyone is blessed by the sign of peace. The choir and audience sing Lamb of God. Eating this bread is called communion, it is the bread of life.
-
Sanctuary bells: The sanctuary bells are rung by the altar servers, they are rung at important times in the mass. These bells are rung during the Eucharist, to tell the audience that this is an important time.
-
The assembly responding: The assembly responding is a time where everyone can join in responding to what the priest has said. For example everyone joins in saying the ‘Our Father’ or when the priest says something that the audience can answer.
-
Pouring the water and wine: The pouring of the water and wine is during the Preparation of the Gifts. The priest pours wine into the chalice (the cup that hold the wine) and then puts a little bit of water in. The wine and water represents when Jesus was on the cross and blood and water poured down him.
-
Church bells: The Church bells or the Cathedral bells are rung to remind people it’s a special time in the year that needs to be celebrated. The bells also chime to call people to worship.
-
Choir singers: The choir singers or also known as the Liturgical Musicians lead the songs (Psalms, hymns and responses) every mass you go to have different songs and different styles of singing and responding. The music helps us be a part of the mass by singing reflecting, being quiet and joyful.
